LinkedIn is basically Facebook for businesspeople. I ignored it for a long time because I really wanted to create an identity for Boyd separate and apart from A. Boyd Campbell, II, and Son of James Boyd Campbell, progeny of Boyd Campbell and Cap Campbell of Hesterville, Mississippi. This sounds stupid since so many of my stories are about my life with my dad.
When Momma got Robert Wingate to come to Jackson to keep me from suing everybody in sight in an effort to preserve Daddy's empire, I pretty much marked a line in the sand between my life as an artist and my life as a businessman.
I think that was the right decision, painful as it was. There were people on my side of the battle, important and powerful people, but without Momma and Robert Wingate, I had to stop. Sometimes, the right decision is the hard one.
Truth be told, though, even though I was a *terrible* student at the Millsaps Else School of Management, I know a hell of a lot about management, accounting, economics, finance, and the rest. While your daddies were teaching you to throw a baseball, mine was teaching me how to read a balance sheet. Ultimately, I went further as a businessperson than you did as a baseball player.
I’m going to increasingly incorporate LinkedIn into my life strategy. As much as I’d love to just bury myself in color, sound, and emotion as an artist, there’s more to it than that. I’m a part of the community, and I have pretty specific goals for the community. It’s time to reincorporate every part of myself, and business is part of that.
Hi. I’m Boyd Campbell. I’m kind of a big deal. You may not have heard of me. I was away, but now I’m back. This is my sword. I will protect you. This is my heart. I will serve you.
