The Wall
A poem
There is a wall between us
There has always been.
I can see through the wall
You never could.
That keeps me safe.
Behind my wall, where I am safe,
I watch
And I listen.
Nothing can harm you
Not while I am here
Not while im around.
I sleep beside the wall,
Because you are safe inside.
That was the promise.
One day,
I realized I was very cold
Cold and alone.
Because you could not see me,
You couldn't see me go.
In the world, away from my wall
I only became more cold
And more alone.
The wall wasn't ever
What was breaking me.
One day, a little bird said,
She is still there, you know,
Your angel,
On the other side of the wall.
So, I returned.
To punish myself for leaving,
I cut a window through the wall.
You can see me now,
but no more than I allow
A little bird flys
through the window in the wall
Delivering messages of flowers and words.
Love doesn't mean there are no walls
But it does mean there is —
Always.
